Fabrics: We have worked on many fabrics, and each fabric has some unique twists to it.
- Linen:
The tighter the weave, the more distinct the pattern; lots of texture shows through in the finished pattern. Colored linen is a far more subdued patterning; fraying can be a problem in marbling this fabric. Great in crazy quilts.
- White cotton:
Very unforgiving as every possible flaw (including loose threads) will show; very bold, bright patterns or more pastel, tone-on-tone patterns; patterns are very distinct and can work well as both focus and background fabrics.
- Colored cotton:
Subdued, yet very elegant patterns that can be accented with a different color; creates a tone-on-tone look; would be great as a background fabric to give some very subtle texture that reacts well when light strikes it. It also is a great stand-alone focus fabric - very rich with the right colors. Using true colors (on Kona cotton) gives a very rich final effect. Using more pastel backgrounds gives a very different look.
- Silk:
One of the best farics for marbling; colors and patterns are very distinct and almost transparent. You have lots of choices in the different kinds of silk and silk blends. Great in crazy quilts, scarves, vests - nearly any kind of wearable. Colored silk
- Chiffon:
Great for marbling - very light-weight; needs extra handling in the pretreating process. Will give a very light, airy effect. Great as a scarf.
- Poly-blends:
These fabrics marble wonderfully, as long as they are not heavily patterned or textured. With the increase in polyblends, these fabrics make great choices for marbled pieces for wearable art.
- Broadcloth and Sateen:
Marbles wonderfully, colors and patterns are very distinct.
- Rayon:
Marbles wonderfully! Colored rayons produce some very dramatic designs as art work. If you look at "Eagles in Flight" in the gallery, that was done on brown rayon.
- Denim/Other:
White denim gives a very classy look, especially if marbled with the grain in just the right pattern. Using blue denim will give you a very subdued look in the pattern. Who knew corduroy would marble? We turned out a great piece of corduroy on a dare - very subtle pattern - great for a good-looking vest to embellish. Great in crazy quilts
Patterns: Wonderfully different, from traditional to a more modern look. Some are very directional, and others are more suitable for nondirectional projects. See the Fabric page for some of our many patterns.
- Very traditional bouquet, nonpareil, chevron
- More modern free form, wave, small feathers, cable, wing, fountain, clamshell
- Directional bouquet, nonpareil, small feathers, chevron, cable, fountain
- Non-directional free form, wave, wing
- A lot of detail bouquet, small feathers, wing, feathers, fountain, swirling freeform
- Movement wave, chevron, bouquet, swirling freeform, fountain
- Large pattern free form, nonpareil (with different-sized comb)
- Small pattern nonpareil, small feathers, wing
Pricing for Fabrics
depends on availability through suppliers; occasionally we get fabrics at special prices and can pass the savings on to you. Because of the customizing, fabrics will be more expensive. But you will have an original work of art to use in your project. ON AVERAGE: $18.00 per half yard - may be more or less, depending on the fabric and the amount of pretreating and post-treating that needs to be done.Customized art work is in a separate pricing category.
Commissioned Art Work
- What: artwork for an office, living room, study, entry, any special space
- How: marbled fabrics in colors to accent the space
- Cost: depends on size of space, complexity of piece, patterns and fabrics used, and final framing or hanging system
Brainstorming
We work with clients to help bring ideas into reality. You can purchase work or fabric already created, or bring ideas of your own to the design board. This is a fascinating, ancient art, and we keep discovering new applications for our contemporary lives. Marbling can be traditional, southwestern, or modern, with an interesting twist of fabric and color.
